The four years Bowling Green Junior High School principal Robert Lightning spent working for Community Education helped prepare him for a successful career in education.
“Working at Community Education exposed me to the diverse needs and challenges of students from different backgrounds and abilities. The experience instilled in me a deep sense of empathy, adaptability, and inclusivity, which have been integral in my approach to education. As a principal, I prioritize creating a supportive and inclusive school environment that celebrates diversity and provides tailored support for each student’s individual needs.”
Originally from Guthrie, KY, Lightning served as an after-school and summer counselor for the Housing Authority of Bowling Green before coming to Community Education. He received a B.S. in Elementary Education, Mathematics Specialist Certification, and his M.A. in School Administration K-12.
Lightning’s proudest accomplishment while at Community Education was helping students grow academically and socially. “My biggest challenge was finding ways to connect with each student individually since Community Education provides services to our large, diverse community.”
After graduation, Lightning went on to first serve as a 5th-grade teacher at L.C. Curry and Parker-Bennett-Curry Elementary School. “My tenure at Community Education allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the importance of community engagement and collaboration in education. Through various community outreach programs and initiatives, I learned how to build strong relationships with parents, students, and community members.”
Lightning and his wife, Lavette, have a son, Gavin, and a daughter, London, a freshman attending the University of Louisville.
